Hi, I’m Jessica.

Given my inclination to ask tons of questions, it’s not surprising I have chosen journalism as my profession. After first falling in love with writing, I have been captivated by the vast possibilities of multimedia storytelling. I shoot photos and videos, produce slideshows and interactive elements to complement stories based on solid reporting. Social media is where the conversation is; Exploring it continues to be great fun.

I believe that journalism can survive – and thrive – online, in print and on our phones if we work hard to engage our audiences, reach out to them and offer a unique experience.

Technology plays an important role, but it is a tool. What matters is storytelling. Technology itself isn’t the story, it serves the story. Used artfully, it can help tell a story in more engaging ways. Finding those new, evolving ways of storytelling is one my passions. I’m excited to be part of where journalism is going.

My life until now

Originally from Berlin, Germany, I moved to Chicago in June 2009 to study at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. This blog is named after my first Midwestern city.

In Spring 2010 I worked in Washington, DC, covering national security and the war in Afghanistan. Find out more about my work here.

I’m currently a fellow with the Medill National Security Journalism Initiative, reporting on emerging national security issues. I’m set to graduate from Medill in December 2010 with a Master’s degree in journalism, focusing on multimedia storytelling and political reporting.

Besides being fluent in German and English, I had the pleasure (more often than not, at least) to study Ancient Greek and Latin in High School, as well as some Spanish and Arabic later.

I’m a huge book nerd and love reading in general. I also enjoy the digital life, especially discovering new technological tools. Twitter and Tumblr are among them.
